Cmdr. David Manges


 

Executive OfficerCmdr. David Manges was commissioned in 2007 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering.  He began flight training in Pensacola, Florida in September 2007, and was designated a naval aviator in December 2009. After earning his wings, he trained with the “Gladiators” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Virginia as an FA-18E/F Super Hornet pilot.

Upon completion, Manges received orders to the “Jolly Rogers” of VFA-103 at NAS Oceana, where he deployed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) in 2012 and 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  During this tour, he qualified as a joint terminal attack controller (jtac), forward air controller (airborne) (FAC(A)), division lead, and mission commander.

After his initial operational tour, Manges reported to the “Flying Eagles” of VFA-122 onboard NAS Lemoore, California as a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) instructor pilot.  While assigned to VFA-122, he served as assistant strike phase head, strike phase head, and squadron standardization officer.

Following his tour at VFA-122, Manges reported to “Team Barbwire” of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11 onboard NAS Lemoore.  While assigned to CVW-11, he served as the assistant operations officer and deployed aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in 2017 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Upon selection for department head, Manges reported to the “Diamondbacks” of VFA-102 onboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan.  While assigned to VFA-102, he served as safety officer, administration officer, operations officer, and maintenance officer.  During this tour, he completed three Indo-Pacific deployments aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in 2018, 2019, and 2020.  As a department head, he qualified as air wing strike lead, air interdiction mission commander, rescue mission commander, and FAC(A) instructor.

Post department head, Manges attended the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.  In November 2021, he earned a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies, graduating with distinction.

Manges has been awarded the Strike/Flight Air Medal (2), the Navy Commendation Medal (3), the Navy Achievement Medal, and various other personal and unit awards.

Manges has flown over 2,700 hours in the FA-18E/F and accumulated over 700 carrier-arrested landings.
