Cmdr. Mattew Piro

Cmdr. Matthew Piro graduated from the University of South Carolina and was commissioned through the Naval ROTC Program on December 15th, 2003.

After four months of staff work at the South Carolina ROTC Unit, he reported to NAS Pensacola for aviation preflight indoctrination.  Upon completion, he was assigned to NAS Corpus Christi where he completed primary flight training at Training Squadron (VT) 27 and advanced multi-engine flight training at VT-31.

In September 2005 he received his pilot wings and was designated a naval aviator.  From there he reported to NAS Jacksonville to learn how to fly the P-3C Orion aircraft at the fleet replacement squadron, Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadron (VP) 30.

After completion of FRS training at VP-30, Piro reported to VP-16 in September 2006.  During this tour he served as tactical publication librarian, detachment planning officer, and quality assurance officer.  He also earned the qualifications of patrol plane commander, mission commander, and instructor pilot.  While on board, he completed multiple deployments and detachments to Djibouti, Africa / Al Udeid, Qatar / Comalapa, El Salvador / Keflavik, Iceland / Kadena, Okinawa / Souda Bay, Greece and Sigonella, Italy in support of the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In September 2009 he reported to NAS Whiting Field as an instructor pilot for VT-6.  In addition to instructing the future naval aviators of the Fleet, he was also the lead instructor pilot in the transition to from the T-34C Turbomentor to the T-6B Texan II aircraft.  After transition he served as the T-6B Primary NATOPS instructor and the squadron NATOPS officer.  He also obtained additional qualifications as section lead, low-level standardization pilot, and out of control flight (OCF) recovery standardization pilot.   

In September 2012 he redesignated as a full time support (FTS) reserve officer and reported back to VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville for refresher training in the P-3C Orion.  He then reported to VP-62 in January of 2013.  While on board, he served as safety/NATOPS officer, pilot training officer, operations officer, and senior pilot.  He completed another deployment to Kadena, Okinawa and multiple detachments to Comalapa, El Salvador.

Piro left active duty in January 2016 and transitioned to a Selected Reservist and has continued to serve with the Broadarrows.  Piro’s personal decorations include two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and one Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal.

In October 2016, he was hired by Fidelity National Financial as a corporate pilot where he is now a captain in the Gulfstream G280 aircraft, serving multiple Fortune 500 companies as well as the Las Vegas Golden Knights NHL Hockey Team.
