Cmdr. Michael Luebkert
Cmdr. Michael R. Luebkert, a native of Midlothian, Virginia, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 with a B.S. in Systems Engineering. After graduation, he reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA and earned a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. After graduate study, he received his Naval Aviator Wings in March 2008 from TRAWING TWO in Kingsville, Texas and reported to VAW-120 in Norfolk, Virginia for fleet replacement training in the E-2C Hawkeye.
In November 2008+, Luebkert reported to the VAW-125 “Tigertails” in Norfolk, Virginia. While attached to VAW-125, he supported the VAW-77 “Nightwolves” during counter-narcotic operations in support of the war on drugs based out of Comalapa, El Salvador. He deployed with Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) three times, once during the CARL VINSON homeport change from Norfolk, VA to San Diego, CA in support of Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE after the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, and twice in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and INHERENT RESOLVE. During this tour, COMACCLOGWING selected him as the 2012 East Coast Hawkeye Pilot of the Year (Sea).
In 2012, Luebkert was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Maryland and graduated with Class 143 in June 2013. Following graduation, he was assigned to VX-20 as a Test Pilot and Project Officer on the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, supporting DSSC-2 testing, EMALS, and other Category “C” air-vehicle testing. He was also the lead Test Pilot on the T-6A Rudder Binding test program.
In April 2016, Luebkert returned to Norfolk, Virginia and reported to the “Tigertails” of VAW-125 where he served as the Safety, Administrative, Maintenance and Operations Officer. As the Administrative Officer, he played a vital role during the 2017 homeport change from NS Norfolk, Virginia to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, bringing the E-2D to FDNF. He completed four patrols with CARRIER AIR WING FIVE onboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76).
Upon completion of his tour with the “Tigertails”, Luebkert reported to NAS Fallon where he served as the Executive Officer of CAEWWS at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC).
Luebkert has accumulated over 3100 hours in 27 different aircraft. His personal decorations include the Air Medal (2 Strike/Flight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
