CDR Mike Tremel

CDR Mike Tremel is originally from Portage, Pennsylvania and a 2004 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in electrical engineering. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in military operations from Airpower University in Montgomery, Alabama.
Designated as a naval aviator in 2007, CDR Tremel reported to VFA-106 for initial flight training in the FA-18E Super Hornet. After training, he received orders to the VFA-31 Tomcatters stationed at NAS Oceana where he completed one combat deployment aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in support of OEF.
In January 2011, CDR Tremel reported to the Navy Fighter Weapons School in Fallon, Nevada. After graduating TOPGUN class 02-11, he remained on staff assuming the role of instructor and FA-18 Combat Systems SME until his departure in the fall of 2013.
In December 2013, he again reported to VFA-31 as squadron training officer completing one combat deployment on board the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) in support of OEF and the opening months of OIR. After his training officer tour, CDR Tremel completed Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama in June 2016.
In October of 2016, CDR Tremel reported for his department head tour with VFA-87 at NAS Oceana. The War Party of VFA-87 completed one combat deployment during this time in support of OIR, while deployed on board the George H. W. Bush (CVN-77). Following this tour, he assumed the role of an Operational Planner (J-35) at U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany before returning to Virginia Beach in the fall of 2020. 
CDR Tremel has flown over 100 combat missions while accruing over 2500 flight hours and over 300 carrier landings. His personal decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, six Strike Flight Air Medals, three Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal and various campaign and service awards. He has been awarded the Commander Naval Aviation Atlantic Pilot of the Year, the Commander Naval Air Forces Peer Leadership Award and the American Legion Valor Award.
