Cmdr. Joshua Portzer
Cmdr. Josh Portzer is an active-duty Naval Flight Officer (NFO) most recently completing his assignment to OPNAV N98 as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Air Warfare.
He commissioned as an Ensign in 2010 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at the University of Virginia. His previous assignments include P-8A Requirements Officer, OPNAV N98; Patrol Squadron (VP) 45; Politico-Military Master's Program at Princeton University; assistant navigator, USS George Washington (CVN 73); Weapons and Tactics Instructor Program Director, Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons School; and VP-4. His operational experience includes deployments to the EUCOM Area of Responsibility (AOR) and Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa in Djibouti; INDOPACOM AOR; and deployed naval operations with Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8 in support of EUCOM.
Cmdr. Portzer holds degrees from Princeton University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Virginia. He has been published in various journals and periodicals, to include Ratio (UK), PRISM, War on the Rocks, Proceedings, the Military Review, and the Military Times. He is a current Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and is a Presidential Leadership Scholar (PLS) alumnus (Class of 2020-2021).
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award, Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Group (CPRG) NFO of the Year, Secretary of the Navy Innovation Award, among other various personal and service awards.
