Welcome

Welcome to the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81 website!  We are located onboard Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Sunliners report operationally to Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 and administratively to Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic. We fly the single-seat variant of the Navy’s newest strike fighter aircraft, the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Our aircraft is designed for traditional air superiority, fighter escort, reconnaissance, aerial refueling, close air support, forward air control (airborne), and air defense suppression and day/night precision strike. The F/A-18E at the same time increases strike mission survivability and supplements the fleet air defense. We deploy aboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as part of CVW-1. In 2022, the squadron received the Battle “E”, Safety “S”, and Retention Excellence Award.
