Cmdr. Jonathan A. Bergstrand 



Cmdr. Bergstrand hails from Sacramento, California, where he accepted an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned in 2006, earning a Bachelor of Science in International Relations. After completing flight school in Pensacola, Florida, and San Antonio, Texas, he earned his naval flight officer (NFO) wings in 2008 and selected the P- 3C Orion, reporting to the “Pro’s Nest” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 30.
 

In October 2008, he joined the “Skinny Dragons” of VP-4 for his first operational tour in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While aboard, he completed deployments to U.S. 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleets. He qualified as both an instructor tactical coordinator and mission commander and served as avionics electronics technician branch officer, undersea warfare tactics officer, and NFO NATOPS officer.

 

Bergstrand then reported back to VP-30 as a fleet replacement squadron instructor NFO. He was hand selected to transition to P-8A, then assisted in the training of the first four squadrons to transition. In September 2013, he completed the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course and served as the antisubmarine warfare weapons officer at the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons School (MPRWS). Returning to VP-30, he led the instructor NFO cadre as instructor-under-training and standardization officer. During this tour, he earned a Master of Science in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.

 

In March 2015, Bergstrand was selected as a squadron maritime tactics instructor (SMTI) and training officer for the “Mad Foxes” of VP-5. While aboard, he completed the first P-8A deployment to U.S. 5th Fleet while also deploying to U.S. 7th Fleet. Following his tour at VP-5, he reported to Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing (CPRW) 11 to serve as assistant operations officer.

 

In February 2018, Bergstrand reported to the “Fighting Tigers” of VP-8, serving as the command services officer, administrative officer, tactics officer, and maintenance officer. He completed deployments to U.S. 4th and 7th Fleets.

 

Most recently, Bergstrand served on the Joint Staff with J-32 Deputy Directorate for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), advising the Chairman regarding airborne ISR platforms and allocation. In 2022, he was selected for future command of the MPRWS.
 

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (strike/flight) (3), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), and various other decorations.
