CMDCM Micheal A. Piunno
Command Master Chief Michael A. Piunno, a native of Ohio, graduated from West Geauga High School in June 1992 and immediately entered the U.S. Navy attending basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, in July 1992. Upon completion of basic training he reported to Aviation Structural Mechanic Apprentice School in Millington, Tennessee, where he completed Aviation Structural Mechanic (Structures) “A” School. He reported to his first duty assignment with the “Sunday Punchers” of VA-75 stationed at NAS Oceana, Virginia, in December 1992 where he deployed twice to the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf.
Master Chief Piunno’s other sea duty assignments include the “Screwtops” of VAW-123 from June 2000 to December 2004 and the “Fighting Tigers” of VP-8 from October 2007 to September 2010. While assigned to VAW-123, he served as the Quality Assurance Representative and Airframes Leading Petty Officer during 2001 and 2003-2004 deployments onboard USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65). While attached to VP-8, he served as the Airframes Branch Chief Petty Officer and Maintenance Control Chief and deployed to Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, Italy, from January to March 2008 and to Qatar from November 2008 to June 2009.
Master Chief Piunno completed an Individual Augmentation assignment to Kandahar, Afghanistan, serving as his unit’s Senior Enlisted Advisor from October 2010 to August 2011.
His shore duty assignments include the “Greyhawks” of VAW-120 from 1997 to 2000, where he served as Airframes Collateral Duty Inspector, the “Rawhides” of VRC-40 from 2005 to 2007, where he served as Work Center Leading Petty Officer, Quality Assurance Representative and upon selection to Chief Petty Officer in 2006, he qualified as Maintenance Control Chief. He later served at Fleet Readiness Center Southeast from October 2011 to August 2014, where he served as Airframes Division Leading Chief Petty Officer and Senior Enlisted Advisor.
His first tour as a Command Master Chief was with the “Sidewinders” of VFA-86, in Lemoore, California, from September 2014 to September 2017 where he led the squadron through deployment onboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69) from June to December 2016, in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. He then served as the Navy Munitions Command Atlantic Command Master Chief from October 2017 to October 2020. He reported as Command Master Chief to Fleet Readiness Center Mid-Atlantic in October 2020.
His academic achievements include an Associate’s Degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Columbia College. Additionally, he is an honor graduate from the Senior Enlisted Academy, class 163 (Blue), a graduate of the CMC/COB course, class 134, and a graduate of the MCPON’s Enlisted Leadership Symposium.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
