Cmdr. Scott Miller
Cmdr. Scott Miller is a native of Reading, Pennsylvania, and a 2006 graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He received his commission from Officer Candidate School and was designated a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in February 2008. He also holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and is a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.
He checked into his first sea tour with the ‘Fighting Tigers’ of Patrol Squadron (VP) 8, a P-3C squadron based out of Naval Air Station (NAS) Brunswick, Maine. He executed two deployments to U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn. He was VP-8’s nominee for the 2012 Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic (CNAL) NFO of the Year.
He spent his shore tour at the P-3C Orion /P-8A Poseidon Aircraft Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. He was selected as one of the first 10 P-8A Fleet Integration Team FRS Instructors and one of the first four P-8A NFOs to join the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Weapons School. He was in charge of starting the Fleet Instructor Under Training program for the P-8A while also serving as a Weapons and Tactics Instructor and Fleet Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) evaluation team lead.
He reported to the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) in Norfolk, Virginia as the assistant navigator at the end of their deployment to USCENTCOM in support of Operations New Dawn, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve. He was named the 2015 CNAL Ship Handler of the Year, and under his leadership the Navigation Department won two consecutive White Wheels for navigation excellence.
After spending 14-months at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island he returned to VP-8 in Jacksonville, Florida as a department head. Miller spent three months as the Commander, Task Group 72.4 operations officer (OPSO) and three months as officer in charge of the Philippines detachment during the Squadron’s 2019 deployment to USINDOPACOM. He took over as training officer mid-way through deployment and executed 11-months of the Squadron’s home cycle as OPSO.
He joined the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. as a Strategic Planner and also spent four months on the Chairman’s Afghanistan Retrograde Crisis Management Team. He was named J5’s Action Officer of the Quarter, 2nd Quarter 2021, before being hand selected to serve as deputy executive assistant and Aide-de-camp to Director, Strategy, Plans, and Policy (J5).
He was selected for Operational Command in 2021 and will be the 88th commanding officer of the ‘Red Lancers’ of VP-10 as of June 2024.
He has over 1,500 hours in the P-3C and over 850 hours in the P-8A. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Strike Flight, x2), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (x4), Navy Achievement Medal (x4), and various other personal, campaign, and unit awards.
