VPU-2 History
The concept of developing a special program dedicated to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Navy’s maritime patrol force began in 1969. Originally established as a small cadre of personnel assigned to a squadron to supplement aircrews on test and evaluation missions, the program’s manning level and responsibilities expanded steadily during the 1970’s. On November 15, 1979, Patrol Squadron (VP) 4 detachment Special Projects was established under the administrative control of their commanding officer. In light of the detachment’s unique organization, it was commissioned as an independent unit on July 16, 1982 with an officer-in-charge. On March 27, 1996, Special Projects Patrol Squadron (VPU) 2 was commissioned as a full squadron, led by an operationally screened commanding officer. In March 1999, VPU-2 relocated to Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. In April 2020, VPU-2 relocated to NAS Jacksonville, Florida, after completing a P-8A transition.
The “Wizards” of VPU-2 were the proud recipients of the 2005, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2022 Golden Wrench Award; the 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2016, and 2018 CNO Aviation Safety “S” Award; the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Blue “M” Award; the 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022 Fleet Retention Excellence Award; and the 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2022 Navy Battle Efficiency Award. Additionally, since its inception, VPU-2 has been awarded five Meritorious Unit Commendations and four Navy Unit Commendations.
