COMMAND HISTORY

Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron (VRM) 40, the "Mighty Bison," was established on March 24, 2022, as the U.S. Navy’s first East Coast CMV-22B Osprey aircraft squadron. Based at Naval Station Norfolk, VRM-40 is at the forefront of the Navy's evolution in airborne logistics. The squadron is comprised of four deployable detachments, each with three CMV-22B aircraft and 88 personnel, which are assigned to a carrier air wing.

The Mighty Bison provide essential joint combat logistics support to the entire Carrier Strike Group. The primary mission is the rapid transport of high-priority parts, equipment, and personnel—including Sailors, inspection teams, distinguished visitors, and foreign dignitaries—to the aircraft carrier with secondary capabilities to support its supporting vessels. The CMV-22B Osprey's advanced capabilities are central to this mission. It can be refueled in-flight by various tanker aircraft, such as the C-130 Hercules aircraft, significantly extending its operational range. Furthermore, its ability to land in austere and unprepared zones allows for flexible logistics support in diverse environments, including performing medical evacuations and refueling other aircraft on the ground.

A monumental achievement for the new squadron will be the deployment of its first detachment with the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group in the spring of 2026. This inaugural deployment represents the culmination of years of dedicated training and integration, marking a promising future for East Coast-based carrier logistics and cementing the squadron's vital role in supporting the fleet.
